CANDLES!
|
We are so pleased to introduce our first My Sisters scented candle. These candles are hand-poured, 100% soy and custom-made for us. The name of our first candle is "Solace" and aptly describes the work that we do in our groups. We provide solace and a place where healing can begin.

For the incarcerated survivor of family violence, the chance of renewal and the ability to mend wounds are the promises that foster survival.
By purchasing one of these candles, you will help us continue to provide environments in which incarcerated women can begin to address and tend to the wounds of their victimization. It supports our quest to build--and maintain--a place for healing. We aim to give survivors a light to follow even in the depths of their darkest moments, leading them to a place of beauty and hope.
When you close your eyes, you will be captivated by this candle's restorative aroma, which draws on notes from nature's most immaculate creations. A handful of petals plucked from exotic flowers and the delectable sweetness of berries drifts on the crisp, fresh scent of an ocean's breeze, offering warmth and clarity for the senses and the soul.
100% of the proceeds from the sale of this candle will go to support the ongoing work of My Sisters, Inc. Buy a candle, change a life!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month
|
October was very busy with numerous activities in observance of domestic violence awareness month. Approximately 500 women attended our events and the wait lists for our groups is growing as a result of this educational outreach.
One of the more significant events was a dramatic presentation of individual stories that were submitted by group participants. The stories were edited and all identifying information was removed. Readers were then recruited to tell the story as though it were their own.
It was a powerful evening for everyone, but probably most especially for the writers. As they listened to their stories being read and heard the reactions of the audience, it affirmed the validity and importance of their voice. Silence was broken!

Merry Christmas!
This season of the year offers many opportunities to spend time with those we love but also to feel the stress of too much to do and too little time in which to do it. I want to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation to you for your continued support and encouragement.
As an organization, we have faced many challenges this year but are grateful for the opportunities that we have to make a difference in the lives of women. We could not do what we do without you.
In a struggling economy and at a time when governments are facing budget shortfalls and cutbacks, incarcerated women are not high on anyone's list of priorities. Unfortunately, their need for services does not end when the budget limit is exceeded. Our volunteers provide a critical need during these lean days.
As you consider your year-end giving, please do not forget My Sisters--your representative behind the bars and razor wires of our nation's correctional facilities.
Have a wonderful holiday season.

We have also started a blog. The challenge with writing a blog about working with abuse survivors, particularly those who are incarcerated is huge. But take a look at our initial offerings and let us know what you think. We value your opinion!

Brenda's article, "Silent Screams: Incarcerated Survivors of Family Violence" was published in the Fall, 2011 issue of The Voice: The Journal of the Battered Women's Movement a publication of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
It is an honor to be included in this journal and to help raise awareness to the needs of incarcerated women, 98% of whom have experienced family violence. To read the article, click here.
